The Rise of ME vs WE in the western culture (the focus on personal individuality) has been strong since the revolution of the 1960's-70'-80'-90's, simply due to:
1/ The Information age,
2/ The computer and digital integration to All areas of peoples lives,
3/ Breaking down molds of foundational social structures,
4/ Media and personal Social Media exponential exposure and creation.
There are many more, and the move is so fast for business leaders, which strategic pathway is BEST to assimilate, integrate and with a long term strategic fit in mind!...Do we emphasize the individuals talent, and let them run their own shop! Or we do we keep with the axiom and tenet of "Collaborative expression", And, "Were all in this together", with group consensus as our guiding light principle!
I remember consulting to a tier 1.5 architect firm, with 3 of the senior board members in first interview, they had a democracy structure for innovation. It was clear from the examples they gave of innovation, ideas and strategies some of them were pure GOLD for them.
But VOTED NO! So they were stuck in these areas!
Benefits of "ME" cultivation in your organisation:
1/ Individual Talent can be breathtaking when let loose to its full potential, (but keep it in within the guard rails of morals-values-virtues-financial metrics),
2/ Eventually the individual transforms (develops, improves, grows-DIG) from Brilliant technician to teacher to Manager to Leader (the natural psychological progression),
3/ IF the talented ME, is mature, they will have loyalty to the organisation (IF your organisation is healthy and mature and sophisticated) because you guided, helped and mentored them to beyond their own awareness and understanding of ALL their potential...(Ceteris Paribus.."All things being equal", ie no changes etc).
4/ The Entrepreneurial Spirit (i.e. the individual part) can uplift the organisation very quickly, through the expression of the "ME"....
This is why, healthy clean culture is an imperative, so the energy is spent in the right direction, i.e no back biting, politicking (see above example), whining or complaining. Thus mental (and emotional and social ) creative power is conducive to the higher innovative functions for Creating Blue Ocean Strategies for your organisation.
If you have a negative knee jerk reaction of the "ME" concept, think of Roger Federer, shakespear, mozart, plato and so on...the List is Endless for positive examples!
